The Beyond the Spectrum team at Writing East Midlands are delighted to share our new video, celebrating the programme, and Autistic creative writing.
Filmed, directed, edited and produced by local company, besq, the video was funded as part of our current delivery period, with the support of Arts Council England, the National Lottery Community Fund, Shine Lincolnshire, and Bradford 2025, City of Culture. The video was filmed in June 2025 at Nottingham Central Library and West Bridgford Library (with huge thanks to Nottingham City Council and Inspire: Culture, Learning, Libraries).
The BTS team invited participants who live locally, plus our Lead and Shadow Writers, to take part in the video. Everyone in the video is reading a piece of their own creative writing, either poetry or prose. We are so proud to hear their words come to life, and grateful to everyone who gave their time – and travelled – to be part of the video. We’d also like to thank everyone who was interested in being in the video but unable to make it on the dates we chose: your enthusiasm was very much appreciated. Lots of our participants and facilitators also sent us photographs of themselves, which you can see at the end of the video.
The video will be shared widely, to help Writing East Midlands show the world what Beyond the Spectrum is all about, and to give potential participants a glimpse of the welcome the programme offers, and the brilliant writing – and writers – who are part of our community. We see the video as more than a promotional exercise though, we see it as a celebration of Autistic creativity, and writing, and ALL our participants and facilitators.
